Earlier this week I was in B&N when I came across the most beautiful cover for Hans Christian Andersen's Fairy Tales. Brad said it looked like a Sufjan cover, I defitely agree. The image above doesn't do it justice, you MUST see it in person. Especially so that you can see the back cover and flaps. I rushed home and looked up the artist and was pleasantly surprised to see that he lives here in Chicago! Anders Nilsen is the illustrator and he's absolutely fantastic. His work is so dreamy and beautiful.

I'm constantly looking on Pitchfork for the "best new albums". I was pleasantly surprised to see Wild Beasts new album Two Dancers on the list. I immediately gave it a listen and was hooked. It's nice to see modern day glam-rock doing successfully. Their video for track 2 (Hooting & Howling) is phenomenal. Enjoy.

All of the sites that sell this book are very vague about which bands are featured in this lovely coloring bible. However, I will not be vague. Two weeks ago (tomorrow) I moved from Kansas City to Chicago, mostly just for fun but also because I'm going back to school. When I first moved in, I had so many boxes! No one thought that the contents of the boxes would fit everywhere, but I was sure that everything had a place. Low and behold...it did! Here's some photos of the finished product.

The last photo here is of part of my room. You can see I'm starting to have some issues fitting everything in...but it's working, sort of.

Last week my boyfriend and I celebrated our 6 year anniversary. We happened to be in Chicago that weekend looking for our new apartment. We were super excited because Dead Snow was coming out that weekend in Chicago! This is just another way we aren't a traditional couple....we went to see Dead Snow for our anniv. It's basically a Norwegian nazi-zombie comedy/horror film and it's AMAZING. If you're at all a film of zombie movies (which I definitely am) then I highly recommend you go out and see it. It's only playing in very select cities, so look around to see if it's playing near you!

I know Baggu is totally old news by now, but in case it's not I'd like to preach the Baggu gospel. I've been pretty frustrated lately with all the "green"shopping bags with their cheesy slogans. They've made going green such an obvious trend. Now virtually everyone is selling the alternative eco friendly shopping bag. You can find them pretty much everywhere now, which is totally a good thing. I'm just a little fed up with the design of most of these bags. All I want is a simple bag, no print, but looks great. BAGGU! Baggu comes in many different sizes, patterns and colors. My boyfriend who's been baggu-ing for quite some time has been urging me to switch to Baggu over the terrible bags I'd been using.

The problem for me is that I usually keep my green bags in the car and have to rely on remembering to bring them in when I shop somewhere. I don't. I always forget! I feel so terrible and most of the time I say "no bag please" at checkout and then have to leave the store with things falling out of my arms. Getting to the important part, Baggu compacts into a little bag making it super easy to fit in your purse or pocket. Anywho, enough of my preaching. Below is a pretty Baggu commercial of sorts. Nakagin Capsule Tower

For those of you who watched Tokyo! you may have noticed this building in the first film Interior Design. This is the Nakagin Capsule Tower. Completed in 1972, this building hosts both residential and office use. Each cube measures only 2.3m x 3.8m x 2.1m. Unfortunately this building has not been kept up and has a lot of asbestos issues. I've heard on many blogs that it will be torn down any day now. So sad, it's such a beauty!

Wow. It's been a long time! Have you noticed? A lot has been happening recently and I haven't had much time to update, put up new merch, be a good business owner etc. My sister just got married and I've been gathering my things for my upcoming move to Chicago. But hey, I died my hair red/brown and I'm ready to go! I'm not moving until August but there's a million x 100 things to do before then!

Anyhow, I leave you with a lovely little video for God Help the Girl. A new and slightly confusing album by Stuart Murdoch of Belle and Sebastian including B&S members plus other random amazing people. The album is out now in Europe but comes out tomorrow (tues) in the US and Canada!

I can't keep Hungry, Hungry Ghosts LP Sleeping English off my current playlist. This is definitely one of my new favorite bands and definitely a new band for each of you to look in to! I feel like each song on this LP is just as catchy as the one before. They have a raw approach to their indie sound that you don't hear too often. Back from LA

I got back from my trip to LA yesterday. I spent some time visiting old childhood friends and school friends. It was a good trip. I was really missing the days when I lived in LA, so this trip was very necessary. I got to visit a lot of the places I used to go frequently like Amoeba and JetRag. A recent customer and new best friend, Stephanie, has an amazing blog. I found out about it when I woke up this morning, and already I feel like I have to share it with everyone! The design alone on this blog is something worth getting excited about. The clean design and great type make this blog so iconic! Stephanie posts about what she's wearing, current fashion topics, favorite editorials and even gives us a look into her personal life. The best part for me is that she's only 18 and it seems like she's doing so much! And ohhh she has the cutest new kitten! But wait! It gets better, Stephanie struggles with CFS which has made her immobile for the past 3 years. This certainly won't be stopping her though, I mean look at her! She's beautiful and talented and isn't going to let anything get in her way!

I first found Merily on LookBook.nu where I quickly fell in love with her style. This girl knows how to mix handmade pieces, cheap finds and vintage pieces better than anyone I've seen. For being only 15 years old, Merily has accomplished so much and has a lot in store for her in the next few years. In her blog, Merily gives you a look at all of her handmade pieces and designs. Her designs are brilliant and original! Did I mention she's an absolute doll too? She's been such a pleasure to chat back and forth with. In our interview, Merily talks about how living in Estonia effects her fashion and how she hopes to bring her country its first vintage shop!

Q: Hello Merily, how are you?
A: I'm fine, thank you :)

Q: You dress in a lot of vintage, what is your favorite thing about vintage clothing?
A: I like the fact that every piece is unique and has its history. Also, you can really count on the good quality of vintage.

Q: You live in Estonia, a country a lot of people don't know too much about. Tell us a few reason's why we should love Estonia.
A: Estonia is very versatile. The lovely dollhouse-looking houses from the middle-ages are next to modern buildings and it's all surrounded with beautiful nature- fens, lakes, forests. The warm summers and snowy winters are nice too!

Q: Do you think living in Estonia helps or hurts your fashion sense?
A: I wouldn't say that living here hurts my fashion sense, but I can't really say that it helps too. It's hard to take it like this, I can't say that the place where I live has no impact on the way I dress, but I don't know is it a good or bad thing since I've never lived anywhere else.

Q: What's one accessory you can't live without?
A: Bags! I always have to carry tons of stuff with me so really big bags are just irreplaceable.

Q: If you didn't live in Estonia, where would you like to live?
A: I'm more of a city girl, so I'd probably choose NY or LA. I'm a huge fan of Sweden as well, so Stockholm could be one option too.

Q: Where would you like to be in 10 years?
A: I would be 25 then, so I would see myself working in fashion industry. Have a great education and degree and I would like to open the first vintage store in Estonia (yes, we don't have one!)

Q: What is the best movie ever made?
A: Amelie. I have seen it a million times (not even exaggerating) and this movie is just mindblowing. The soundtrack, those details, great actors and honest storyline make this movie my all-time favourite.

Q: Who is your style icon?
A: Hmm. I don't think I have one. I mean, I admire the style many iconic women- Agyness Deyn, Audrey Hepburn, Mary-Kate Olsen, Jacqueline Kennedy but I don't have this one and only style icon whose style I try to venerate.

Q: What are your top 3 favorite musicians or bands?
A: The Kooks, Lykke Li and System of a Down

Q: What is your favorite item for sale at 1918 Vintage?
A: I love the Sugar Cane Dress, It looks like the kind of dress you could spend your whole summer in. I love the Smarty Pants Glasses too- very nerdy, very me! :D

Q: Hi! How are you?
A: I'm tired but I'm fine !

Q: Your style of photography is so unique, what photographer do you look to for inspiration?
A: I don't know. I don't have a favorite photographer. I'm this kind of person who don't know to choose only one thing but want everything. Because inspiration can't be unique. If it is, it's not an inspiration but a copy. And in my point of view, inspiration is reckless so...I don't know ahah.

Q: Do you prefer digital photography or film photography?
A: I never had the occasion to use film photography but I hope one day I could. So I can't say that kind I prefer.

Q: You have such a great sense of fashion, who is your fashion idol?
A: Hum...I would say Mary-Kate Olsen even if my style doesn't look like hers. I think she is the only one who test everything and looks really cool with. And I like how she changes everytime.

Q: What is your favorite film?
A: Whoa...It's a very difficult question. I love a lot of films ! Moulin Rouge inspired me at the beginning. Top hats, absinthe, Toulouse-Lautrec, cabaret...And I'm a BIG fan of Tim Burton !!! I watched his last movie several times. Sweeney Todd is too cool ahah. I love dark characters.

Q: Do you do a lot of editing after a photo shoot?
A: Not really. If the light is really good on the pictures, I don't have to edit a lot. That depends of the set or the mood I want to pass. I never do exactly the same editing.

Q: You seem to use a lot of natural light (sunlight) in your photos, what do you like the most about using natural light?
A: I love the sun. When it rains, I'm so sick and depressive. I think it's really powerfull. Everybody love it ! You know, when the weather is beautiful, everyone is happy. And I take pictures mostly outside because I don't have any inspiration in a house. I need nature, beautiful places and sunlight of course. I think it's magic and helps a lot to dream.

Q: How long have you been taking photos?
A: I'm taking photos seriously for 2 years. But I always "play" with a camera. I had my first when I was 9 and it was a Barbie one !

Q: What are your favorite 3 musicians or bands?
A: I love the strange music of Animal Collective. I love Yeasayer too. And Mgmt, Passion Pit, Crystal Castles...I don't know. I have too much favorite bands. And as I listen a lot of music, even some rap music, I don't have any preferences. I hate to be lock in only one music style. My favorites change every month ahah.

Q: If you could live anywhere, where would you live?
A: In the sky.

Q: Where is your favorite place to shop in your hometown?
A: Hum hum. I love the little little second-hand shop hide behind a big men's shop next to my school. It's hard to find something cool in it but sometimes, they have a bead. And that's why I love it.

Q: What is the one accessory you can't live without?
A: Shoes ! Shoes do everything in an outfit. I have a collection of vintage shoes and I can't live without them. I love leather bags too.

Q: What is your favorite thing for sale now at 1918vintage. com?
A: Tricycle necklace is gorgeous and I like the bow headband too. So cute !

I got a chance to see Toyko! last Saturday in Chicago. I've been pretty excited to see this film for a few months now, so it's release was so exciting for me! This old 747-200 plane has been recycled and formed into a hostel at the Stockholm-Arlanda airport. Jumbo Hostel has 25 rooms, a lounge and even the original first class seats. That's what I call smart recycling. Thanks for the info Inhabitat!

MUSIC WE LOVE: Beirut/Realpeople

I think it's safe to say that I've been genre-ly challenged when it comes to music. I enjoy so many music genres that sometimes It gets a little confusing. Why do my ears enjoy the sound of a Latin brass band and experimental electronica? I've never really been able to decide on one specific music genre that is my favorite. Luckily, Beirut has released a new double EP with two distinct sounds that tickle my fancy.

The first EP is called March of the Zapotec. It's the traditional Beirut sound with a little extra umph! Band leader Zach Condon went down to Oaxaca and met a 19 member band to record his new EP with. The Jimenez Band adds such a great sound to this EP. A trumpet powered band with the traditional upbeats that we're used to hearing from Beirut. The first track, El Zocalo, has an almost circus feel with the cymbols clapping and the trumpets blasting. Once you move onto track two, La Llorano, you get Zach's incredibly haunting voice. The rest of the EP I won't give away.

The second EP is titled Holland. Many people don't know that before Beirut, Zach performed as Realpeople. With Holland, Zach has returned to Realpeople to give us something extra special! Each of the tracks in Holland were created in Zach's home and has a digital sound that we haven't yet heard from him. I must say that I love the synth beats and almost glam sound that Zach has created on some of his tracks in this EP.

Please check out this double EP, which is available now on iTunes. Especially if you're like me and can't quite choose a music genre to cling to.

4. It already has 9 out of 10 stars on IMDB (good sign!)

Mariell, oh Mariell! We love you so much. I don't even quite remember how I found Mariell, because i've been following her work for quite some time. She's a brilliant Norwegian with way too much talent for her own good. Her self portrait work is to die for, and she pulls off blonde and brunette better than anyone I've ever known! Q: Hi Mariell, how are you?
A: I'm stressed and excited. Working on my application to a fashion
photography school in London.

Q: Your photos are so imaginative, what is your greatest influence?
A: Thrift stores / old things and clothes.

Q: Your fashion sense is also amazing, who is your fashion icon?
A: I have never had a fashion icon, but i've always been interested in
design, colors, fabrics and old clothes. My style variates a lot as
well, but you find me somewhere between 1950s and todays fashion.

Q: When did you start taking photographs?
A: As a 12-year old i figured we had this program "photoshop" on our
computer. After that day I knew what I wanted in life. So i started
with taking stupid pictures of my self so i could photoshop them.

Q: That tattoo on your arm is beautiful, why did you chose that design?
A: Its my grandmothers signature, who i was very close to. She died in
July 2004 way to young. And the flower is "forget me not". She told me
how much she loved that flower when i was about 7 years old.

Q: What are your favorite 3 musicians or bands?
A: I listen to a lot of different music and I only have 1 favorite
artist that I always turn back to, Kim Hiorthøy.
Generally I listen to electronica, reggae, hardcore, chip tune and i
love dancing to artists like simian mobile disco, justice and steve
aokis remixes. Ladytron is also a band that i like a lot and never get
tired of.

Q: What is the greatest film of all time?
A: One flew over the cuckoo's nest is a good film, but again; i have a
lot of movies i like and its hard to pick one.

Q: Do you prefer digital or film?
A: Depends. I love film and i collect old cameras. I have 12. But with
my patience Im afraid digital is the best option. I always bring a
singel-use camera though since i seldom care to print my digital
photos. I use film for fun and digital for work.

Q: How much editing do you do after a photo shoot?
A: Not much. I have made my own action in photoshop that i put on all
my photos to create the colors i love. Ive been working on that action
for years and Im finally pleased with it.
But some times a picture needs more than that. Im thorough when it
comes to editing pictures since thats my job as well as my hobby. I
work for Norway's largest subscription newspaper as an "photoshopper".

Q: Your self portraiture work is really impressive. Do you prefer
shooting yourself or someone else?
A: I have shot myself for years and years and thats what Im used to.
Its easier to bring the feelings I want in my photos that way. But at
the same time it takes more time and its more difficult than shooting
other people because of practical things. I often get nervous when i
shoot others and that blocks my creativity. But i hope one day i'll
manage to work with others the same way i work with myself.

Q: What is one accessory you can't live without?
A: I always wear my casio watch and my gold ring with dark blue
diamonds that used to be my great-grandmothers ring. I haven't had it
off since i was 14.

Yesterday I picked up the latest edition of the Harvard Review because the cover was just too dang pretty. It was only $10 and is full of short stories, poems, drawings, book reviews and lots of other stuff. I'm definitely going to subscribe to the Harvard Review so i'm sure you'll hear more about this in the future. It comes out twice a year and this is already issue 35!
